Mikel Arteta covered his face as he arrived for Manchester City training after suffering a cut during an altercation in the Old Trafford tunnel after the Manchester derby.

Sky sources understand the Spaniard was hurt as Jose Mourinho clashed with City players and staff after taking issue with how the winners celebrated their 2-1 derby victory from their open dressing room.

The United boss made his feelings known to City goalkeeper Ederson and a quarrel ensued which, according to Sky sources, resulted in Arteta suffering a cut to the head.

United and City have been asked by the FA for observations relating to the incident which, according to Sky sources, also saw Mourinho have a carton of milk thrown towards him. It is believed no punches were thrown.

Arteta was pictured shielding his face as he drove into training on Monday, with fellow coach Lorenzo Buenaventura in the passenger seat.

The referee, Michael Oliver, did not see the incident after the game and did not include it in his report of the match.

City clinched a record 14th consecutive top-flight victory as they opened up an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
