Martin's starting stats from Man Utd v Man City

As has been well-documented, Man City set a new record with 14 consecutive wins in a top-division season. Arsenal and Chelsea had won 13 straight in the Premier League era, plus Preston and Sunderland had won 13 straight in the 19th century. There could hardly have been a tougher 14th fixture for City.

They have also set a new club record for 16 league games unbeaten from the start of a season, beating their 15 matches of five years ago when they lost their 16th game 3-2 at home to Manchester United.

In the process, they denied United a new club record of 40 home games without defeat, which was book-ended by 2-1 home defeats to Man City. That matches a run from December 1964 to March 1966.

City have now won five of their last seven Premier League visits to Old Trafford and their 100 per cent away record ended United's 100 per cent home record this season.

Paul Pogba has been a miss for United, who have scored 24 goals in the eight Premier League games he has played in this season - but only 12 (half the number) in the eight he has missed.

David Silva scored his third Manchester derby goal in 14 derbies, all at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford scored his second in his fifth Manchester derby.

Both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have managed 54 league games in their current jobs. Mourinho has a perfectly acceptable 104 points, but Pep has 124.

Winning 2-1 again

Manchester City have now claimed four 2-1 wins in a row; what's the longest successive stretch of that scoreline in the Premier League? (Dave, Salford)

MARTIN SAYS: Sunday was a fourth successive 2-1 victory for Man City - after 2-1 wins over Huddersfield (a), Southampton (h) and West Ham (h).

And indeed they have set a new Premier League record for consecutive wins by that scoreline.

The result saw the runaway league leaders surpass the three consecutive 2-1 wins themselves and seven other clubs have achieved in Premier League history.

Previous consecutive 2-1 PL wins record

Date of last game Team Consecutive 2-1 PL wins

23/08/03 Chelsea 3
27/08/05 Man City 3
27/09/08 Aston Villa 3
26/12/14 Tottenham 3

Everton hold the record for the longest run of consecutive wins by the same scoreline, winning five games 1-0 in the 2002/03 season under David Moyes. Last Saturday shows Moyes hasn't lost his knack for 1-0 wins now he is at West Ham!

Everton's consecutive 1-0 wins

09/11/02 Everton Charlton 1 0 W
17/11/02 Everton Blackburn 1 0 W
23/11/02 Everton West Brom 1 0 W

With City travelling to Swansea on Wednesday and hosting Tottenham on Saturday, it's a record that could be matched or even beaten in the coming days.

Who has the longest current unbeaten home run now that Manchester United's streak is over? (Ben, Solihull)

MARTIN SAYS: Manchester United's conquerors Manchester City now hold the longest unbeaten home run in the Premier League of 20 matches. Liverpool are on a 10-game unbeaten streak at Anfield, while Tottenham (7), Crystal Palace (5) and Chelsea (4) make up the top five.

City still have a long way to go before they can think about setting records, with their current run not even making the top 10 of longest unbeaten home runs in the Premier League.

The record is held by Chelsea as they went a remarkable 86 home games without losing, before eventually being beaten by Liverpool in October 2008.

Roberto Mancini's Manchester City went 37 home games without defeat before they lost to Manchester United in December 2012.

United have had two lengthy unbeaten home runs of 36 and 35 games, which were ended in December 2000 and October 1996 respectively. And Arsenal went 32 home games unbeaten before they lost to Manchester United in February 2005.

A low for United

Have Manchester United had lower possession or fewer shots in a game than against Manchester City on Sunday? (Mick, Hitchin)

Image: United registered just eight shots in Sunday's derby defeat to City

MARTIN SAYS: It was indeed their lowest share of the ball since Opta's record began. Manchester United only had 35.39 per cent of the possession against City as they were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Their previous lowest possession stat, since Opta's records began, was at home against Swansea in January 2014 when they had just 38.53 per cent in another 2-1 defeat.

Arsenal enjoyed the lion's share of the possession when they came to Old Trafford in May 2009 and February 2016, with United having 39.05 per cent and 39.16 per cent respectively.

And United only had 39.94 per cent of the possession when City last visited in the league in September 2016.

United mustered eight shots against City on Sunday, which is not their lowest total at home in the Premier League.

That came against Arsenal in November 2013 when they had just five shots, but still managed to win thanks to a goal from Robin van Persie.

United only managed six shots in a 0-0 draw against City in October 2015 and seven in a 3-2 win against Arsenal in February 2016. They have had eight shots on several occasions, including on Sunday.

Early champions

What's the earliest a Premier League title has been won and how many points did that team have at that stage? (John, Didsbury)

MARTIN SAYS: This record belongs to Manchester United, who clinched the 2000/01 title with five games to spare on April 14, 2001.

It took United an extra game to secure the title the year before, as a 3-1 win at Southampton on April 22, 2000 clinched the first title of the millennium.

Sir Alex Ferguson's 13th and most recent title was sealed after 34 games on the exact same date as Robin van Persie's emphatic hat-trick overcame Aston Villa.

Earliest PL title wins

Season Team Date of Title Win Games Left
2000/01 Man Utd 14/04/2001 5
1999/00 Man Utd 22/04/2000 4
2012/13 Man Utd 22/04/2013 4
2003/04 Arsenal 25/04/2004 4
2005/06 Chelsea 29/04/2006 2

Arsenal's 'Invincibles' secured their title with four games to spare on April 24, 2004, while Jose Mourinho's second title at Chelsea was clinched with two to spare on April 29, 2006.

Interestingly, Manchester City's current 46-point haul after 16 games is more than all five of the aforementioned title-winning sides. What's more, City are on course to hold the biggest mid-season lead in Premier League history.

If City preserve the current 11-point gap over United for a further three games they will equal the record for the midway margin in a 20-team Premier League season - and they could beat the record of 12 set in a 22-team season too.
