The in-form striker has further enhanced the reputation he built for himself at Brentford with a spectacular spell of goalscoring with the Kent club and the 28-year-old is desperate for a crack at the big time.
Taylor, 28, has been the subject of a third, increased bid from City boss Joe Royle and it appears that the £1.5 million price-tag slapped on his head has now been met by the First Division leaders.
Joe Royle admitted: "We would like to sign Robert but we need to put this deal to bed one way or another very soon." However, Gillingham manager Peter Taylor is reluctant to let his star man move on.
