The 23-year-old striker made only four appearances for The Citizens, after his £500,000 move from Division Three Mansfield Town midway through last season's campaign.
The Scot began his career at Carlisle United and used to play in the centre of defence. He scored for Joe Royle's side in a pre-season match at Burnley last week, which prompted Robins manager Danny Wilson to make a move for the hitman.
With the arrival of George Weah from AC Milan and the Paulo Wanchope from West Ham, Peacock's chances of seeing first-team football at Maine Road seem increasingly unlikely.
If Peacock does move to Ashton Gate, it could make a £1.5 million bid for Robert Taylor from Tony Pulis's Portsmouth less likely to be accepted.
Taylor played in City's weekend 4-1 defeat against neighbours Stockport County, and should get another opportunity to start in Manchester City's three remaining pre-season fixtures.
