The 30-year-old hard-man had been out-of-favour at City at the start of the season and he spent loan spells at Blackpool and Crystal Palace before returning to Maine Road in December and winning back his first team place.
The former Huddersfield Town ace has not featured for The Citizens since being substituted in their 4-2 FA Cup defeat to Liverpool last month but City boss Joe Royle initially denied reports that he was on his way out of the club.
Morrison has seen his chances of playing regularly limited by the arrivals of Paul Ritchie, Steve Howey and Richard Dunne at Maine Road, and City have decided to cash in the player.
The Ashton Gate outfit hope that the experienced star, who helped Manchester City to two successive promotions, can help them in their own promotion bid.
Meanwhile, the Robins have failed in a bid to sign Richard Cresswell from Leicester City on loan until the end of the season.
City boss Danny Wilson is a big fan of Cresswell having worked with him at Sheffield Wednesday and he has tried to take him to Aston Gate for the past few months.
Cresswell has failed to establish himself at Filbert Street since his move to The Foxes in September scoring just one goal and seeing his chances of playing regularly limited.
