Dickov is out-of-favour at Maine Road, and has made just one appearance for the club since October, and that was as a last minute substitute against Millwall in January.
He has recently rejected the chance to join Second Division promotion-chasers Stoke City, who said the player wanted to remain with Kevin Keegan's men.
However, Dickov's contract expires at the end of the season and he was expected to change clubs in the summer.
But it now seems the Scottish international is poised for a move to pastures new before then as Leicester are prepared to hand him another stab at Premiership football.
The 29-year-old may not be in the top flight for long, though, with The Foxes 11 points from safety and manager Bassett will have his fingers crossed that Dickov can be the saviour.
The Foxes have scored a meagre 18 goals in The Premiership and Dickov's experience alongside Brian Deane may boost the strugglers' firepower.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have handed one-year contracts to a batch of the club's youngsters.
Chris Shuker, Terry Dunfield, Tyrone Mears, Stephen Jordan and Rhys Day have all been rewarded with fresh deals by Keegan.
