The Maine Road chief has sent talent scout Graham Carr to Italy to take in Chievo`s clash with Juventus on Sunday.
The 30-year-old has been a regular fixture in the Chievo team for the last seven seasons, and his consistency has reportedly caught the eye of Keegan.
Keegan has already made one foray in the transfer market, bringing in Marseille forward Djamel Belmadi on loan, but a defender is still a priority.
Roma`s Saliou Lassissi has emerged as one option, but D`Anna is the latest player to catch the former England boss`s eye.
A move for Bordeaux stopper David Sommeil appears to have met with a setback, prompting Keegan to assess other targets.
Carr will travel to the Bentegodi where he will compile a dossier on the former Fiorentina and Como man before reporting back to Keegan.
A positive performance against Juve`s famed strike-force could prompt Keegan to make an approach but, with Chievo flying high in Serie A, they may resist all overtures from Maine Road.
