The former Standard Liege stopper always dreamt of playing in England's top-flight, however his route across the English channel detoured through France.
Van Buyten was eager to move to The Citizens due to Kevin Keegan's reign at the club and is now looking forward to boosting his chances of staying beyond his loan spell.
"I played for three years in France after moving from Standard Liege but I always dreamt of playing my football in England," said van Buyten to the club's official website.
"Now that dream has been realised by coming to Manchester City so you can imagine I am very happy. I am delighted to be at City and believe that English football with this club will suit my physical style.
"The fact that Kevin Keegan is the manager was an influential factor in me deciding to come here. The first time we talked we were on the same wave length and I understand his thinking on the game.
"I want to give my best during the three months that I am here. If there is the possibility then I would like to stay at the club."
