The former Liverpool midfielder has failed to shine since joining City in the summer from Real Madrid.
McManaman has been restricted to a substitute role in recent weeks and he admitted injuries had played their part in not allowing him to establish himself in Kevin Keegan's starting XI.
"The City fans have probably not seen the best of me but I have been struggling with a few little knocks," said McManaman.
"Of course you want to play all the time, but it is not a huge problem for me at the minute.
"Any footballer at whatever level you play, you want to play football.
"This week it has been a back problem but I trained for the first time today and I feel all right.
"When results are not going well people think they should be given a chance. But recently I have not been 100% fit, the gaffer knows that and that is probably one of the reasons why I haven't been in the side."
Meanwhile, City's new defender Daniel Van Buyten is happy at how things have gone so far since his loan move from Marseille.
The Belgian international joined City on loan until the end of the season with David Sommeil going in the opposite direction and he is a big fan of English football.
"I have had a very hearty welcome here, I didn't feel like I had to adapt to anything," said Van Buyten.
"This is a great club with great fans and I quite like the English football. The game goes up and down constantly and the technical level is very high."
