The France international is to end his nightmare spell at Fulham by joining German side Wolfsburg on a two-year contract.
Fulham have allowed Marlet to leave Craven Cottage on a free transfer after the forward spent the past two seasons on loan at Marseille.
He was not short of interest over the summer, with Auxerre and City both exploring the possibility of a deal.
But the 31-year-old claims those two clubs dallied over doing a deal, and the speed with which Wolfsburg swooped prompted him to agree to move to Die Bundesliga.
"I don't know the German league and people told me a lot of good things about it," Marlet told L'Equipe.
"I talked a lot with Bixente Lizarazu (who plays for Bayern Munich) and he said not to hesitate.
"I had some concrete contacts but it lasted too long. With the Germans, it was very clear from the start.
"I would have been attracted by Auxerre. I talked with Jacques Santini, who wanted to hire me, but the officials were a little too long in making a decision.
"Manchester City also showed an interest but it was exactly the same as with other clubs. I wanted to go quickly.
"At Fulham, I had a lot of trouble but I never caused those problems. I never asked them to buy me at such an expensive price.
"I felt fine there and I just wanted to play. My image was tarnished. I am not a man that causes trouble."
