David Sommeil will be out for six weeks after fracturing his cheekbone on Monday.
David Sommeil will be sidelined for at least six weeks after it was confirmed that he suffered a fractured cheekbone during Manchester City's Monday night defeat of Aston Villa.
The Frenchman had been hoping to press his claims for a regular starting place in the City line-up after having been frozen out for an entire season.
Those plans will now have to go on the backburner, however, as it was revealed that Sommeil has already gone under the knife in a bid to correct the injury.
"David had surgery yesterday on a depressed fracture of the cheekbone," said City manager Stuart Pearce.
"He will be out for six weeks, which is a shame because he has worked very hard to get back in the team."
Pearce has also singled out Sommeil's defensive partner Sylvain Distin for praise following some impressive performances at the back this term.
"If he is not an international player, I'm a Dutchman," quipped Pearce, who hails from Hammersmith.
"He is unbelievable. He's got pace, power and he can jump 16 feet!"
Richard Dunne will partner Distin in the heart of defence against Fulham on Saturday after successfully coming through a reserve game against Wrexham.
