Manchester City have tabled a new contract offer to club captain Sylvain Distin.
Manchester City have tabled a new contract offer to club captain Sylvain Distin and are hopeful he will commit his future to Eastlands.
The French stopper is a pivotal figure in manager Stuart Pearce's thinking, but he is also admired by a number of other clubs - most notably Newcastle.
Distin has made no secret of his desire to play European football and said recently he was in no rush to thrash out his future.
The 28-year-old has over a year to run on his present deal and is unlikely to sign on with City yet to secure a place in Europe, but Pearce is hopeful of persuading the defender to remain at Eastlands.
"We have put an offer into his agent yesterday," said Pearce.
"He is our captain at this football club, he's top man around the club in my eyes on and off the pitch and I want him to stay with me. So we are hopeful."
Pearce is delighted to hear that Distin is motivated by on-pitch events rather than a bumper contract extension.
"For me it's fantastic when I hear from players that finance is not the over-riding factor," said Pearce.
"In The Premiership if you are earning good money, chances are you will be catered for the rest of your life. It is great to hear players saying they want the club to go places.
"And then as a manager you put the ball back in their court and say 'do you know which people determine where we go? Yeah, it's you. And it's down to you which way the club goes'."
