Rennes have revealed they are interested in Manchester City striker Georgios SamarasRennes have revealed they are interested in Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras, but are not optimistic on their chances of landing the player.
The French club are in the market for striking reinforcements with Portsmouth target John Utaka strongly linked with a move away from Rennes.
Samaras has failed to live up to expectations at City following his £6million move from Heerenveen in January 2006.
The Greek international struggled to hold down a place in Stuart Pearce's side last term and only managed to score six goals all campaign.
Rennes manager Pierre Dreossi is an admirer of Samaras, but he concedes City's takeover and managerial reshuffle means a deal is unlikely.
"I know him well," Dreossi told France Football.
"We have been following him for a long time. He is young, and is a player for the future.
"Unfortunately for us, the change in coaches at Manchester City means he will not be leaving them this summer."
Meanwhile, Rennes are reported to have shelved their interest in Charlton winger Dennis Rommedahl.
Rennes were keen to offer the unsettled Rommedahl an escape route out of Charlton following their relegation, but they were unable to agree a deal with the flying winger.
