Sven Goran Eriksson confirmed he will be looking to add to his squad as Manchester City chase a UEFA Champions League spot.
City climbed back to fourth in the table with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle thanks to goals in either half from Elano and Gelson Fernandes.
Eriksson continues to play down the Eastlands outfit's chances of finishing above Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
But, with striker Nery Castillo already confirmed as a January arrival, the Swede is keen to splash more of chairman Thaksin Shinawatra's cash.
He told Sky Sports: "We have already taken one, Nery Castillo, he's a very good player.
"Almost for sure, something more will happen. Exactly what, we are not sure yet, but something more, hopefully.
"We're going to try to keep the position where we are or even try to get better.
"Realistically, where we are today as a squad, maybe we shouldn't be able to compete in the long-term this season with the big four. But let's hope we can stay where we are."
The victory at St James' Park was City's first on the road since the opening day of the season, with Elano starting to show the form he displayed at the start of the season.
Eriksson added: "It's a long time since we've won away from home, so it's a good start to the new year.
"Elano hasn't been 100 per cent since October since he played for Brazil. He's been injured, but now he's on the right way again and very soon you will see the real Elano again."
Eriksson also believes that Newcastle should stick with under-fire manager Sam Allardyce.
He added: "I always have sympathy for managers under pressure. The longer you are in this job it happens to you as well, that's life in football.
"Sam Allardyce is a very, very good manager. He has shown that in the past and he will do it here as well. Just give him some time, he has only been here for a short time."
