The 33-year-old has been absent from the national team since 2011, but Alejandro Sabella has included him in his early plans for Brazil on the back of an impressive end to the season with City.
Demichelis endured a difficult start to life in the Premier League following his switch from Atletico Madrid, before performances picked up and he played his part in City's Premier League and Capital One Cup victories.
The centre-back spoke of his delight at making Sabella's provisional squad after believing that his international days were numbered.
"I felt that I was out of the national team," he told America and Closs.
"I didn't imagine that I was going to be talking about a recall to the team. This season has ended in the best way for me after we won the Premier League.
"My recall was a surprise, but with a big desire. I think that I am in a great moment.
"I was asked several times if I still thought I could be recalled and I always answered that while I am physically well, I had the wish.
"Now that I have the chance that I wasn't really expecting I am going to try to fight for a place and take advantage of this opportunity."
Demichelis is joined by City team-mates Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta, but striker Carlos Tevez has missed out despite his fine form at Juventus this season.
Demichelis said: "There is a nice competition between all the players that have this chance. I am going to try to give the team my experience.
"I am very happy and proud of this opportunity that I am going to try to take advantage of as much as I can.
"I am going to give the best of me, using all my character as revenge for not being in the team in the last times."
Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Franco Di Santo, who is currently at Werder Bremen, has also been included in the 30-man squad and he was equally as surprised as Demichelis.
"I read on Twitter that I had been called to the national team. Then I saw the news here in Germany and got connected to the internet for watching the event," he told Radio La Red.
"I am going to have to talk with my club and ask them if I can leave earlier because we have to play some friendly games, but the season has finished."
