Boro boss Bryan Robson is a big admirer of the versatile player, who is currently playing as a striker for the struggling Rams, and he contacted Derby counterpart Jim Smith over a possible move for the former Carlisle player.
Middlesbrough, who are also struggling at the wrong end of the table, are keen to strengthen their squad as they try to move away from the relegation zone and arrest the current slump experienced by the team.
Under-pressure boss Robson sees the 24-year-old ace as an important signing who will add extra options to his team selection as he can play almost anywhere.
Smith is keen to hang on to one of his most prized assets and he is not interested in selling him as his own side tries to stave off the threat of relegation.
