It was hoped that that the Australian international would be able to make a quick return with rest, but now he will have a hernia operation.
The former Bradford shot-stopper has been struggling with a groin problem for some time and the club feel the time is right to resolve the problem now.
"There has been no improvement in Mark's condition over the last few days and it was felt that this is the best course of action," a Boro spokesperson told the club's official website.
"As a result Mark will undergo a hernia operation in London on Thursday."
Boro have plenty of cover in goal with Mark Crossley declaring himself fit to face Manchester United, despite having to be carried off against Liverpool last weekend with a head injury.
His replacement that day Marlon Beresford is also available and if Crossley is fit will be on the bench for the visit of United.
