Agent Rob Moore is furious that Boro have scrapped their bid to sign the Celta Vigo marksman, presumably in preference for Empoli hot-shot Massimo Maccarone.
What appears to have happened is that the Teessiders set up both deals, in fear of one of them failing to materialise.
A Riverside envoy is expected in Italy over the next couple of days to tie up the formalities, and offer guarantees of method of payment, of an £8 million raid for the Italian Under-21 international.
"As of last night, everything regarding the deal was tied up," said Moore.
"We were 100 percent sure that Benni would move to Middlesbrough.
"However, I received a one-line email message from Boro, saying the deal is off with no explanation.
"They just told me - 'Following on from all our discussions on this regard, we regret to inform you that the deal is off.'
"I am quite shocked and clueless, to say the least.
"British clubs are quick to slam agents but, from my experience with Boro, it is they who give football a bad name.
"When I told Benni he just went quiet.
"He said he will prove Middlesbrough wrong against Spain."
The South African international will be striving to earn a move elsewhere, after impressing during a loan stint with Porto last term.
The World Cup gives the Bafana Bafana forward the perfect opportunity to display his talents, and he has been unlucky not to score already in the tournament.
A move to Boro previously collapsed when he failed to obtain a work permit, but both Moore and the player both expressed their delight this week at the deal finally going through.
However, it is now off, and that will surely be the end of the matter.
