The Italian international arrives on Teesside from Empoli and hopes to use Boro as a springboard to greater things.
"I'm going to be honest, but it's no secret that Manchester United is my dream," Maccarone told the News of the World.
"I really can't wait to play at Old Trafford.
"Coming to Middlesbrough will give me that opportunity, even though it will be as an opponent not a United player.
"But maybe I will go to play for Manchester United one day."
The revelation by Maccarone is hardly likely to placate the fans at the Riverside, although the 22-year-old is determined to immerse himself in the English culture.
"I will only return to Italy if there's a really big club interested in me," added Maccarone.
"I do know England is the right place for me. "Nobody forced me to come here. I'm here because I want to be.
"My biggest fear is not being able to settle. I don't speak English, although I'm studying hard.
"Being a skilful player and having an eye for goal is not enough. You have to settle and embrace the culture."
