Both sides had numerous chances to win the game, but both goalkeepers Paul Jones and Boro's Mark Schwarzer were in fine form to keep the scoresheet blank.
Boro dominated the early proceedings with Massimo Maccarone looking impressive up front and he almost broke the deadlock after just two minutes, but Jones was out quick to clear the danger.
Marian Pahars had a great chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute when put clear by Anders Svensson, but the Latvian's poor first touch allowed Schwarzer to win the ball from his feet Maccarone forced Jones into a fine save midway through the first half as the game swayed from end to end.
The closest either side came to grabbing an all-important winner was when Schwarzer produced a brilliant save to keep out Anders Svensson's powerful header 15 minutes from time.
A draw was probably a fair result but both managers will be wondering how neither side failed to score after an open game.
