Both players, particularly Christie, have been linked with moves to The Riverside since McClaren moved to the North East last year.
The Teesside are club are even thought to have made a bid for Christie this summer, but The Rams asking price always caused Boro to baulk.
Derby, though, are now in financial dire straits and Boro could land both players for £5 million.
McClaren is already believed to have spent the majority of his transfer budget this season, with the additions of Franck Queudrue, George Boateng, Juninho, Massimo Maccarone and loan man Geremi.
However, Boro chairman Steve Gibson could loosen The Riverside purse strings again, to help McClaren take his side into the top-six.
Boro's recent slip in form has highlighted that their squad is not a deep as he would like and the addition of Christie and Higginbotham (pictured) would certainly improve it.
McClaren has worked with both 23-year-olds - Higginbotham at Manchester United and Christie during his tenure at Pride Park - and knows what both are capable of.
Nothing can be completed until January when the transfer window opens, but any deal could be set up prior to this and Boro may well look at this.
McClaren is also said to have completed a recent scouting trip to Denmark.
It remains a mystery as to who the player is but the likes of Brondby's Thomas Lindrup and Copenhagen's Sibusiso Zuma are being linked as possible signings.
