It was Boro's first league defeat at the Riverside this season and to make it even more insulting the victors Villa had only scored four goals away from home in The Premiership before the win.
"It's very disappointing for us and we defended badly as a team. We made lots of mistakes and it just shows the strength of our squad," bemoaned McClaren.
"We missed players such as Ugo (Ehiogu) and Gareth (Southgate) and our side was very young and inexperienced."
The former England assistant did have some praise for debutant 18-year-old Andrew Davies, who gave his all at centre back.
"He stuck at it, he kept going and showed the kind of character we needed in that football match," said McClaren.
"He battled - he was up against Dion Dublin and Darius Vassell who played very well. It bodes well for his future."
