The Riverside outfit are keen to make the Cameroon star's stay at the club permanent after impressing this season.
Real Madrid are believed to be asking for a fee in the region of £9 million for the midfielder which has held up the deal.
Middlesbrough have first option on Geremi and despite talks breaking down Boro boss Steve McClaren is still hopeful of agreeing a deal for him.
"There were talks but nothing came from them. I talk to him every day and he's happy here. We will do everything possible," said McClaren.
Manchester United are reported to be watching his situation along with a number of other clubs and are ready to move for him should Boro fail to capture Geremi.
McClaren also revealed that he is keen to secure a permanent deal for Brazilian midfielder Doriva.
Doriva joined in January from Celta Vigo on a short-term deal and McClaren is keen to make his stay longer after impressing in the last few months.
"He has done well despite not speaking a word of English," added McClaren.
"We'll look at his situation and the possibility of bringing him here."
