Middlesbrough are keen to make the Cameroon international's stay at the Riverside permanent after impressing this season.
The North East club, who have first option on Geremi, have held talks with Madrid over the midfielder, but have been unable to meet Real's asking price.
Real are holding out for a fee in excess of £8 million for the 24-year-old and if it is not met Geremi will return to El Santiago Bernabeu.
Real sporting director Jorge Valdano admitted that Boro's bid had been rejected and that the player could return to the club for next season.
"£8 million is as much as Boro can afford but it does not meet our expectation," said Valdano.
"As things stand we expect to have Geremi back with us for the start of next season."
The news could alert a number of other clubs to Geremi's availability if Middlesbrough fail to reach an agreement for the African.
