Derek Boateng is currently playing for OFI Crete, after joining the Heraklion outfit on loan from Panathinaikos.
The Ghanaian Under-21 international burst onto the European scene in dramatic fashion when performing for Panathinaikos as a raw teenager in the Champions League in 2001.
It is understood that the player, who is 20 on Friday, will link up with Boro on Sunday, and spend a week training with Steve McClaren's Premiership side.
Boateng, who shares his surname with current Riverside favourite George, impressed in the 2001 World Youth Championships in Argentina, helping Ghana reach the final, and has previously attracted Middlesbrough's attention.
Indeed, Boro sent a delegation to Athens in a bid to sign the attacking midfielder back in February, 2002.
In January 2001, Boateng revealed: "Every day, I dream of playing in England..
"In England, the pace is fast, the players are strong and a lot more intelligent now. That is where I wish to play."
