The Teessiders, buoyed by the extravagant capture of Gaizka Mendieta, are rumoured to be willing to make a second raid on the Biancoceleste by lining up a swoop for 28-year-old Manfredini.
Steve McClaren has already confirmed he wants two more additions to his squad before the transfer deadline closes, and he travelled to Rome to conclude negotiations for Spanish international Mendieta.
Manfredini was the subject of a protracted move from Chievo in 2002, but was loaned to Osasuna in January after failing to make an impact at Stadio Olimpico.
The Spanish outfit had first option on his signature, but Mallorca, Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, Ancona and Udinese are also admirers of the former Genoa midfielder.
It has also been reported that the wide man was offered to Parma as part exchange for Hidetoshi Nakata recently.
