The 23-year-old has seen his chances at Boro become limited and now he wants a fresh start elsewhere.
Stockdale is currently on loan at West Ham, and although sidelined by injury - he is ready to make an impact at Upton Park.
"I am enjoying getting out and playing," he said.
"I have grown up with Middlesbrough since I was a young lad, it is my club, the one I have always supported and wanted to play for.
"But things haven't worked out well and it has come to a stage in my career when I want to play football and I am grateful to West Ham for giving me the opportunity to come here."
Stockdale has sunk behind Danny Mills, Andrew Davies and Stuart Parnaby in the pecking order - the last of whom is ready to make his own comeback from injury.
Parnaby suffered a serious knee injury in September, but is now ready to return to action.
"I was looking forward to the challenge once Danny came in but unfortunately I got the injury and I haven't been able to do anything," he said.
"But I'll get back and push him. He's an England international so I'm not surprised he's settled so easily, I expected him to come in and be able to cope with anything.
"It's going to be hard but it's something you have to do and something I'm willing to do to get back.
"I'm running this week and then back to full training on Monday.
"It's been quicker than expected, it was meant to be 12 weeks and I've made it in 10.
"I had a little tear in my cruciate ligament but I didn't need an operation which was a big boost. I'll train for a couple of weeks then we'll see what happens."
