The former Manchester United star won Boro's Player of the Year award last season, but a loss of form at the beginning of this campaign saw him fall dramatically down the pecking order.
Brazilian Doriva is now the preferred option in the middle with George Boateng, while Gaizka Mendieta and Boudewijn Zenden fill the wide berths meaning Greening now has to settle for a place on the bench at best.
Greening did start in the weekend clash with Birmingham, but that was the first time since December that he found himself in the fold.
"Every player is upset when they are not playing," he admitted.
"Travelling to games and not being involved on the bench, that was frustrating.
"I was upset that I wasn't playing, it was hard not being involved, all I want to do is play football.
"I haven't played much due to injury and illness. When you play as much as I did last season you get used to it."
Greening still hopes that he has a future on Teesside, adding: "I hope so. Until I'm told any different I will be part of this team next year."
