Kiely produced a string of smart stops to keep Boro at bay and help The Addicks to earn a 2-2 draw at The Riverside Stadium.
Boro boss McClaren was in wistful mood after the match, after admitting he felt the hosts deserved to claim a victory.
"I thought we should have won the game," commented McClaren. "I can't believe the amount of saves that Kiely had to make.
"We didn't play very well in the first but three great saves kept us out while Carlo Nash had nothing to do but pick the ball out of the net twice.
"It was a fantastic response by the team in the second half. We completely dominated and coming back twice showed great character."
Danny Graham nicked a point for Boro after Matt Holland and Shaun Bartlett had twice put the visitors in front.
The teenage striker climbed off the substitutes' bench to equalise and McClaren praised the youngster, who came to the club from the non-league ranks.
"It was one of those days where we had to throw the kitchen sink and everything at Charlton to get a result," added McClaren.
"We really went for it, we left the back door open, but we really went for it.
"Danny Graham pops up and shows his bravery to get a great goal.
"He has made an impact. He has come out of non-league, taking a while to adjust but over the last few months his rise has been rapid. He's a brave lad and scores goals."
