Massimo Maccarone scored in-front of Steve McClaren on Wednesday evening.Steve McClaren was delighted with his trip to Italy on Wednesday as he watched Massimo Maccarone in action.
The Italian international is currently on loan at Siena from Middlesbrough, after a similar ill-fated move to Parma ended in January.
Maccarone is beginning to recapture his form and McClaren witnessed him bagging the opening goal in a 2-0 success over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
McClaren was also watching Juventus' Igor Tudor - also on loan at Siena, and both did nothing wrong in front of the Boro chief.
"We're constantly planning for next season," said McClaren.
"The fans know we've got good established links with Juventus. We've already made trips over to Italy and I plan to make many more with next season in mind, not only to Italy but around Europe and this country as well.
"Last night was a great opportunity to see Massimo in action against Roma. He not only scored but did well overall, which was obviously nice to see. I also took the opportunity to keep an eye on Igor Tudor."
Maccarone is due to return to The Riverside in the summer, but his future remains in doubt with Portsmouth's Yakubu Aiyegbeni due to sign.
Talks are also continuing over McClaren's new deal.
"It's been a hectic period, with four games in 11 days the latest demand," said McClaren.
"But I want to sort something out sooner rather than later because I think that will settle everyone down, the players and the staff, and we can really start planning for the future.
"We've got a team that's good enough, we need to develop the squad and bring in younger players and that's what we need to do in the summer.
"I still believe whatever happens this year the progress has been very much forward. With everyone fit we've got a squad that can challenge anything."
