The Middlesbrough defender was on the end of a questionable challenge from Johnson towards the end of Austria's 2-0 win over Northern Ireland.
The left back reacted angrily and a mass brawl broke out and the end result was that both Pogatetz and Johnson saw red.
Despite receiving his marching orders, Pogatetz insists he was correct.
"My way of reacting was strong but appropriate," he said.
"Without a shin-pad my leg would have been damaged totally.
"I think it is understandable to show some emotions in such a situation, my leg is black and blue all over now."
Irish boss Lawrie Sanchez feels the Boro man made a meal of the challenge.
"Perhaps the challenge was a bit rash but if Pogatetz hadn't made such a fuss the referee would probably have only booked Damien," he said.
"He is a small man of Ireland while the other guy is a tall man of Austria."
