Middlesbrough have turned down Darlington's bid to take Danny Graham on loan.
The 20-year-old has just returned to Boro after a three-month loan spell at Derby County and The Quakers were keen to land him.
Graham, who has previously spent time at The TFM Arena, was wanted by Darlington boss David Hodgson to replace Kyle Lafferty - who has been recalled by parent club Burnley.
However, Boro have got other plans for their promising England youth international.
"I've spoken to Middlesbrough about Danny and it's a no-go," Hodgson said.
"It was an audacious request and we have to accept that Danny is destined for greater things.
"We have a very good relationship with Boro. They've been open and honest with us.
"They have bigger plans for Danny and that is something we have to accept."
Hodgson also confirmed that midfielder Brian Close would be sidelined for the rest of the season with a long-standing ankle problem.
"It's another massive setback for Closey," Hodgson The Northern Echo.
"He's had terrible luck with his ankle. Hopefully his recovery will go according to plan and he'll be back sooner rather than later."
