Gareth Southgate has confirmed he will allow Gaizka Mendieta to leave Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed he will allow Gaizka Mendieta to leave the club.
The former Spanish international has been on Teesside for over three years after joining from Lazio - but he is now out of favour at The Riverside.
The 32-year-old has been dogged by injuries in recent months which have not helped his quest for a first team slot - and it now appears that Southgate is ready to let Mendieta leave in January.
"At his age, I am sure he will want regular first team football," Southgate admitted.
"There will be a few clubs alerted to the fact he's not getting a place and we'll see what happens."
Mendieta has been a popular figure during his time in the North East, but a move back to his homeland come the New Year looks a likely scenario.
His hometown club of Athletic Bilbao have been strongly linked with a move, although a number of clubs in La Liga could be tempted by the former Valencia ace.
Meanwhile, the future of full back Stuart Parnaby is also in some doubt.
The 24-year-old has been offered fresh terms but he appears unwilling to commit whilst he remains on the fringes of the first team picture.
Boro are hoping to persuade him to sign an extension in the coming weeks.
