Jonathan Woodgate feels Gareth Southgate deserves 'full credit' for lifting Middlesbrough up the Premiership table.
Boro are unbeaten since the turn of the year and have gone from being embroiled in a relegation battle to the fringes of the top 10.
Questions had previously been asked about rookie boss Southgate's credentials, but he has responded to the criticism by masterminding the eight-game unbeaten run.
Woodgate has praised the Boro manager for turning the club's season around and for ensuring morale never wavered at The Riverside.
"We have always had confidence in the dressing room," said Woodgate.
"The manager has always drummed into us that we are a good side and we are starting to play well now.
"We have got the balance in the side right and full credit to the manager and his backroom staff, they are all working just as hard as the players."
As a sign of the growing confidence on Teesside, Woodgate revealed the players were disappointed to draw 1-1 at home to Arsenal at the weekend.
He added: "We were hoping for three points and we could have beaten them, but Arsenal are a good side and we have played well both times against them.
"But in my opinion, it is two points dropped. The lads felt like they had been beaten and I am no different.
"But you have got to recognise that Arsenal are a very good side, they were Champions League finalists last year."
