Middlesbrough are sweating on the fitness of Matthew Bates.Middlesbrough are sweating on the fitness of Matthew Bates after he picked up an injury in Tuesday's win over Darlington.
The central defender was forced to limp out of action after picking up a leg problem in the 2-0 win at the TFM Arena.
It was Bates' first game since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury last November.
Boro are set to send Bates for a scan to find out the full extent of the injury and Gareth Southgate hopes the injury is not too serious.
"It is a concern because the way he fell didn't look very good," said Southgate.
"We'll scan it in the morning and fingers crossed it's not serious but I must say it didnt look good.
"It is not the same injury as before as it was the other leg. The pitch was slippy and it looked like he lost his footing."
Meanwhile. Luke Young is on the verge of completing his move to The Riverside after passing a medical at the club.
