Ross Turnbull is determined to grab his chance and become Middlesbrough's first-choice goalkeeper.
Mark Schwarzer was a regular starter between the posts last season but his departure has presented Turnbull with an opportunity.
The 23-year-old will battle it out with Brad Jones for the No.1 jersey and Gareth Southgate is looking closely at both men in pre-season.
Turnbull, who played in the 1-0 defeat to Victoria Guimaraes on Thursday, is also keen to earn a new deal with his current contract expiring next summer.
"I've got a year left on my contract now," Turnbull told the
Evening Gazette.
"I'm definitely playing for my future and there's nothing more that I want than to stay and be the No.1 goalkeeper, and with a year left it's down to me to show them what I can do."
Exciting times
When asked about the likelihood of penning a new deal, he added: "There are no talks going on. They probably want to see how I get on and go from there.
"I want my future to be here at this club because these are exciting times, we've got a fit, young squad and I think we can do really well this year."
Turnbull is confident that he would be able to cope with the demands of playing Premier League football on a weekly basis.
"People say I haven't got experience but I've been out on loan and played games in the lower divisions. That's how you get experience," said Turnbull, who has spent time at Darlington, Bradford, Cardiff, Barnsley and Crewe.
"I'm definitely ready for it. I've never been more focused and fitter, I feel really good at the moment so I need to maintain that and see what happens on August 16."
