Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray insists that Kevin Thomson will have to play through pain in order to get back to full fitness.
Thomson broke his leg in only his second Boro appearance at Leicester in August following his arrival from Rangers.
Since then he has battled back to fitness, but three times he has been forced off early in games.
But Mowbray is not planning on resting the Scottish ace, insisting only playing will get him through his tough period.
"It's a blow to lose Kevin at any stage of the game because he's an important player for us," said Mowbray.
"But the way for him to deal with it is to keep playing through it.
"The tissue is soft in that area and it was painful for him."
Mowbray meanwhile has welcomed Marvin Emnes back to the club following his loan stint at Swansea and could pitch him straight into his side against Millwall at the weekend.
"We don't have any natural width so we'll see what he can offer us and if we can utilise him in the squad on Saturday."
