Elsewhere, Swansea left it late to beat Crawley and Wigan knocked out West Ham, while Bradford prevailed against Burton. Leeds caused one of the shocks of the night with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Everton at Elland Road. Neil Warnock's side stunned their highly-flying Premier League opponents when Aidy White fired them in front after just four minutes with a fine solo effort for his first goal for the club. Leeds doubled their lead 20 minutes from time with Rodolph Austin diverting Danny Pugh's shot into the net with the slightest of touches. Everton reduced the arrears nine minutes from time when Sylvain Distin saw his header loop over Leeds keeper Jamie Ashdown and into the net. Champions Manchester City crashed out to Aston Villa after a 4-2 extra-time defeat at the Etihad Stadium. City broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when James Milner found Mario Balotelli inside the box and he drilled his shot low into the net. Villa were gifted a route back into the game just before the hour mark when former Villa man Gareth Barry deflected Andreas Weimann's cross into his own net much to the delight of the travelling fans. Parity proved short-lived as City restored their lead on 64 minutes when Aleksandar Kolarov curled a superb free-kick over the wall and past former City keeper Shay Given. Villa fought back and sent the game into extra-time when Gabriel Agbonlahor powered into the box and fired home an equaliser pas Costel Pantilimon on 70 minutes. The visitors took the lead for the first time in the contest six minutes into extra-time when Pantilimon failed to deal with Agbonlahor's shot and Charles N'Zogbia was on hand to snaffle up the rebound. Villa put the game beyond City when the impressive Agbonlahor made it 4-2 seven minutes from the end of extra-time with a deflected effort which looped over Pantilimon. Chelsea cruised into the fourth round with a thumping 6-0 win over Championship side Wolves at Stamford Bridge. Gary Cahill set Chelsea on their way with the opener after just four minutes and Ryan Bertrand doubled the lead four minutes later. Juan Mata made it 3-0 on 17 minutes with his first goal of the season and Oriol Romeu celebrated his birthday with the fourth from the penalty spot on 53 minutes after Victor Moses was brought down by Dorus De Vries. Fernando Torres got in on the act just before the hour mark when he headed home Mata's corner for his first goal in five games. Victor Moses completed the rout for Chelsea with his first goal for the club on 71 minutes.

The Premier League side made light of their numerical disadvantage on 54 minutes when Craig Gardner scored with a superb free-kick from 25 yards out. Garry Monk's last-gasp goal earned Swansea 3-2 win over Crawley as Michael Laudrup's men survived a major scare.
