The Spaniard, who replaced Tony Mowbray at the Riverside Stadium helm in November last year, has dragged the club away from the fringes of the Sky Bet Championship relegation battle and at times has flirted with the top six.
However, he was an unhappy man at Reading on Tuesday night, remaining in the dug-out as his side slipped to a second successive defeat.
Karanka told the Northern Echo: "I prefer not to say why I stayed on the bench. I prefer to say that I couldn't motivate the players.
"This is a learning experience, every day. This is my first season and I am learning about the league and the players every day."
Boro end their campaign with Barnsley's visit to the Riverside on Saturday and a trip to Yeovil on the final day.
