Newcastle, Aston Villa & Leeds live on Sky Sports on opening weekend

Newcastle and Aston Villa will both be shown live on Sky Sports on the opening weekend of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season.

Both teams will be competing in the second tier of English football after being relegated from the Premier League.

Newcastle will get the Championship season underway on Friday, August 5 with a trip to Fulham, live on Sky Sports at 7.45pm.

Aston Villa will then be in front of the cameras on Sunday, August 7 (4.30pm) in Roberto Di Matteo's first competitive game in charge, as they travel to last year's play-off finalists Sheffield Wednesday.

Also on Sunday, Garry Monk's Leeds travel to QPR, live on Sky Sports from midday.

Head of football at Sky Sports, Gary Hughes, said: "It's always a special moment when the football fixtures are announced and we're very excited to confirm our first set of English Football League games.

Following the full release of the EFL fixtures on Wednesday, Sky Sports will live stream the draw for the first round of the EFL Cup at 1pm on Facebook, YouTube and across Sky Sports platforms.

This season Sky Sports will show more than 700 matches from eight different leagues across its channels and digital outlets. 

For the first time, viewers will be able to enjoy regular live coverage of Premier League matches on Friday nights in addition to those shown on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Monday Night Football.

In another first, viewers in the Republic of Ireland will be able to enjoy live coverage of the Premier League in a regular slot on Saturday afternoons at 3pm. 

And an expanded mobile clips service delivered by the Sky Sports' Football Score Centre app will enable users to enjoy more highlights of Premier League and Football League matches on their phones on match days.
