Dutchman Gerald Sibon was the hero for The Owls bagging a hat-trick for the home side. The first Wednesday player to score three goals in a match since Chris Bart-Williams managed that feat back in 1993.
Peter Crouch has equalised for the visitors before Sibon added his second and third goals of the game to all but seal the points. In-form youngster Owen Morrison then added The Owls fourth before former Wimbledon striker Efan Ekoku completed the rout adding a firth.
There was still time for Crouch to score his second of the game, but it proved nothing more than a consolation for Gerry FrancisÇÖ side.
Elsewhere, Fulham remain on top of Division One after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Preston North End at Deepdale.
Preston are the only side to have beaten the Cottagers this season after their 1-0 win at Craven Cottage back in October, and they almost repeated the trick.
Michael Jackson headed the home side in front from a Gary Parkinson cross, however a superb second-half strike from Sean Davis rescued a point for the visitors.
Meanwhile, West Brom's Lee Hughes hit the net again, although his effort was heavily deflected by Mark Williams, as The Baggies picked up an impressive 1-0 victory over Wimbledon at Selhurst Park.
Gary Megson's side now lie in third place, behind West Midlands rivals Birmingham on goal difference who scored two in a minute through Michael Johnson and Geoff Horsfield to salvage a 2-1 victory at Gillingham - after Martin Grainger had reduced Trevor Francis' side to 10 men.
Huddersfield ended their run of 19 matches without a win after they came from behind to beat Crewe 3-1 at the McAlpine Stadium.
Colin Cramb put the visitors ahead just before half time against the run of play with a superb volley, however the lead didnÇÖt last for long.
The Terriers came out after the break with all guns blazing, and stormed back thanks to from goals from Martin Smith, Simon Baldry and Kevin Gallen to claim the invaluable three points.
