Top of Gradi's list had been former Crewe favourite Wayne Collins (pictured) who left Gresty Road for Sheffield Wednesday in 1996 and is now languishing in the Fulham reserves.
Gradi's approach to the West London club was rebuffed, causing him to reportedly turn his attentions towards Hartlepool's highly-rated Tommy Miller, only to be told by 'Pool boss Chris Turner that he would accept no less than £1m for the 22-year-old.
"I inquired about getting Collins on loan, but it was a no. He would have helped," Gradi told The Sentinel.
"We have tested the water with an attacking player from a Third Division side and I was quite prepared to persuade my directors to spend some money, but not £1m."
Meanwhile, Bury are interested in taking Colin Cramb on loan after the striker was told that he was no longer welcome at Gresty Road, although it seems unlikely that The Shakers would be able to finance a permanent move for the Scot.
