Di Livio travelled to the World Cup with the Italian team, and has become a talisman to the Fiorentina fans as they watched their club plummet into dire straits.
The veteran feels that perhaps not everything possible was tried to save the club, and the player confesses that he is so distraught that he is considering retiring.
"This is just too much of a disappointment," said Di Livio.
"Florence and Fiorentina did not deserve this.
"I would still like to be assured that every possible route out of this was explored.
"That every institution in the city was pleaded with, that every entrepreneur was asked to invest and that [majority share-holder] Cecchi Gori tried every possible thing.
"Cecchi Gori told me yesterday by phone that a solution would be found.
"We have given everything to this affair, but unfortunately it was useless.
"I don't know what I will do next, and to be honest I am beginning to think like I should retire.
"But we have all been freed and everyone will have offers to consider.
"I haven't spoken to any of my team-mates. To the fans I send my massive sympathies, but to Cecchi Gori I don't want to say anything."
One team that may come in for Di Livio is Fulham, whose director of sport Franco Baresi knows the player well.
