The midfielder attracted interest from Fulham, and admitted the prospect of playing in London appealed to him, but has instead become the only survivor from the old Viola squad to join Serie C2 outfit Fiorentina 1926.
The Artemio Franchi side were relegated due to mounting debts and bankruptcy, and lost all of their highly-priced squad on free transfers, including Portuguese hit-man Nuno Gomes.
"It has not been a difficult decision," explained the 36-year-old former Juventus star.
"In life, there are values that are more important than money.
"I had accepted a reduction in salary. This is a challenge that is not based on money.
"I know Pietro (Vierchowod, the new coach), and we have played together.

"This city has shown me much affection, and I have decided to repay this by remaining in Florence."
