Chris Coleman has told Steed Malbranque he will continue to play on the wing.Chris Coleman has told Steed Malbranque he will continue to play out wide as the position suits him better defensively.
The Belgian-born France winger is keen to play a supporting role to Fulham's strikers, but has been informed Papa Bouba Diop has been assigned that position.
Coleman believes Malbranque works harder when on the wing and is confident the 25-year-old will reproduce his best form before the end of the season.
"Steed wants to play in the middle behind the striker," Coleman said. "But for us we need big Papa Diop to be in there to do a defensive job, and Steed isn't great defensively.
"For some reason when Steed plays wide he tracks back to defend better. He has accepted that's the case and gets on with it.
"He's still not the Steed we've come to know and love, but he's got enough games before the end of the season to get close to his best."
The Cottagers will be desperate for Malbranque to hit top form with the side languishing just four points clear of the drop zone, although they have a game in hand over their rivals.
