The summer signing from Watford has struggled to break into the first team, making just two substitute appearances so far this term.
Helguson has seen his first team chances limited by the form of Brian McBride and Tomasz Radzinski, but Coleman insists the Icelandic international will play a big part for Fulham this season.
"It's up to Radz (Radzinski) and McBride how long Heidar stays out of the team," said Coleman. "Brian has scored three goals in five games with one disallowed against Birmingham.
"Heidar has come in and knows he's playing second fiddle to Tom and Brian.
"He scored two for us in the reserves recently. His attitude is great and I'm delighted he's here.
"It's only a matter of time before he gets his chance.
"We mustn't expect too much from him because it's a big step up to The Premiership from The Championship.
"But he's played international football for Iceland and knows he must be patient here. Luckily he has a spot-on attitude so we're not worried about it."
