Aberdeen are mourning the loss of one of their greatest ever players after Graham Leggatt died at the age of 81.

The winger came through the city's junior leagues and became an integral part of the Pittodrie side which won the first of the club's four league titles in 1955 at the age of 18.

Leggatt also scored the winner for Aberdeen in their 2-1 League Cup final win against St Mirren at Hampden Park.

He later went on to play for Fulham, teaming up with then England captain Johnny Haynes during his eight-year stay at Craven Cottage.

The pair formed a prolific partnership and Leggatt scored one of the quickest hat-tricks in football history over the course of three minutes in a game against Ipswich in 1963. The feat was a record in the English top-flight until Southampton's Sadio Mane broke it in May,

He also turned out for Birmingham and Rotherham as well as non-league side Bromsgrove Rovers and Toronto Blizzard in the North American Soccer League.

In addition to that, Leggatt won 18 caps for Scotland, scoring eight goals, and played for his country at the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden.

An Aberdeen spokesman said: "The term 'legend' is overused these days but in Graham's case it was entirely appropriate.

"He was a wonderful servant for both club and country and our thoughts are with his family at this extremely sad time."

Fulham said in a statement: "Everyone at Fulham was extremely sad to learn of Graham Leggatt's passing at the age of 81. All at Fulham are thinking of Graham's friends and family at this time."
