Wigan have agreed terms with Middlesbrough to sign Yanic Wildschut, Press Association Sport understands.
The 24-year-old forward scored four times in 17 appearances during a loan spell with the Latics that ended after Saturday's game with Scunthorpe.
Manager Gary Caldwell has been to keen him back to the DW Stadium permanently, though, and revealed on Tuesday that the biggest stumbling block to bringing the Dutchman back to the club was money.
That hurdle has now been cleared after the Sky Bet League One side met Boro's demands for Wildschut, whose deal in the north-east expires in the summer, and it is now down to the player to decide if he wants to make the switch.
Speaking about Wildschut on Tuesday, Caldwell said: "The fans have seen that excitement he brings to the team.
"We've helped his career. I don't think it was going anywhere at Middlesbrough and we gave him a home, an opportunity to show his talent. He did it in a great way and he bought into what we were trying to do at the club.
"He enjoyed his spell here, we want him back and he wants to come back."
