Jake Buxton has departed Wigan after expressing a wish to return to the midlands.

The 32-year-old made 42 appearances for Latics last season having joined from Derby but was unable to prevent the club from being relegated into the third tier.

Buxton had two years remaining on his deal but has agreed to mutually terminate it having decided he wants to join a club nearer to his family in Nottinghamshire.

"We wish Jake all the best," boss Paul Cook said on Latics' official website.

"I know him by reputation and by what the chairman has told me about him. He's a great professional who gave 100 per cent to the cause while with us and we respect the fact he has been honest.

"Sometimes in football you have to make difficult decisions with the long-term good of the club in mind, and we feel this is a move that benefits both parties."
