Eight successive wins have lifted Wigan to the summit and Jewell insists that his players deserve credit for the run and that they will not be easing up in their bid to win promotion.
"I've always said that the best teams are the luckiest and I've heard opposing managers coming here saying how lucky we've been but eight clean sheets in a row isn't lucky," said Jewell.
"At this stage of the season, it's important we don't take the foot off the gas. We have to keep going.
"I've got competition for places at this club now which is great.
"It's great because everyone wants to play. We haven't got a big squad despite what people think but we do have a decent squad."
Jewell was also happy at the development of top scorer Nathan Ellington, who has attracted the interest of some Premiership clubs with his performances at The JJB Stadium.
"The Duke is a better all-round player now," said Jewell.
"He'll always have his goalscoring opportunities and we've asked him to be more of a team player and be a bit better.
"I have a go at him all the time because we know he can get better, he's only young.
"He gets all the headlines but Robbo [Neil Roberts] works his socks off alongside him."
